Daily prayer

Prayer for Today

Today is the only day you can actually pray in. This prayer for today asks God for three things: to be present in what is in front of you, to have enough for what today asks, and to notice Him in it. Say it now; it takes thirty seconds.

Today is the only day you can pray in

We spend a remarkable amount of our lives not in today. We are replaying yesterday’s conversation, or rehearsing next week’s, or scrolling through a stranger’s afternoon. Meanwhile today, the one day we actually have, is happening without us.

A prayer for today is an anchor. It pulls your attention back to the twenty-four hours in front of you and asks God to meet you there. Not in the version of your life you are worried about. This one.

What a prayer for today should do

Jesus told us to ask for daily bread. Not weekly, not a stockpile. Daily. There is a quiet discipline in that: you come back tomorrow and ask again.

So a prayer for today is small on purpose. It asks for:

  • Presence. Eyes to see God in the ordinary hours, not just the dramatic ones.
  • Enough. Strength for what today asks, patience for what today brings. Not for everything; for today.
  • Release. Permission to leave yesterday and tomorrow where they belong, with Him.

If your daily prayer has become a long list of requests about the future, try narrowing it down to just today for a week. Most people find it does something to their anxiety that the long list never did.

Pray it at the moment you reach for the phone

The hardest part of a daily prayer is not the praying. It is the remembering.

Here is the trick: attach it to something you already do every day without fail. For almost everyone, that is reaching for the phone. You do it dozens of times a day; you do not need a reminder. Put the prayer right there.

The thirty-second prayer above was written for exactly that moment. Say it before you unlock. If you want the phone itself to enforce the order, PrayerMax locks your chosen apps once a day and only opens them after you have prayed, which turns the reach for the phone into the reach for God.

2. Short prayer

Prayer for today when I am overwhelmed

Father, there is too much today. Too many things, too many people, too much noise. I cannot hold it all, so I am not going to try. Show me the next thing. Just the next one. Give me grace to do it well and grace to let the rest wait. You are not overwhelmed, and I am in You.Amen.

3. Short prayer

Prayer for today for guidance

Lord, I have decisions to make today and I do not trust my own judgment. Guide me. Close the wrong doors firmly enough that I notice. Give me wisdom that sounds like You and not like my fear. And where I still have to choose without certainty, let me choose with faith.Amen.

4. Short prayer

Prayer for today for gratitude

Thank You, God, for today. For breath, for light, for a body that works well enough. For the people I will see and the ones who are thinking of me. For food, for work, for a bed to come back to. Teach me to notice these things while they are happening, not only when they are gone.Amen.

5. Longer prayer

A longer prayer for today

God of this day, I am bringing You an ordinary Thursday, or whatever today is. Nothing dramatic. Just the day. I know You are not only in the big moments. You were in the manger and the workshop and the boat, in the meals and the walks and the long conversations. So I believe You are in this day too: in the commute, the emails, the dishes, the small talk, the waiting. Help me to actually live it. My attention wants to be anywhere but here — on my phone, in the past, in a worry about next week. Pull me back. Give me the grace to be present to the person in front of me and the work in my hands. Where today is hard, give me strength. Where it is boring, give me patience. Where it is good, give me the sense to notice and say thank You. And if today holds something I did not plan for, something that frightens me, remind me quickly that You planned for it, and You are already there. This day is Yours. I am Yours. Let us live it together.Amen.

6. For someone else

Prayer for today for someone I love

Lord, I am praying for their today. Whatever is on their calendar, be on it too. Give them strength for the hard part and joy in the good part. Put someone kind in their path, and let them be someone kind in someone else's. Bring them safely to tonight.Amen.

7. From Scripture

Prayer for today from the Psalms

This is the day the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it. Teach me to number my days, that I may gain a heart of wisdom. Satisfy me this morning with Your unfailing love, that I may sing for joy and be glad all my days.Amen.

8. Short prayer

A thirty-second prayer before I unlock my phone

Lord, before I look at the world, I am looking at You. Whatever is waiting on this screen, You are bigger than it. Keep me from wasting today. Keep me from losing myself in it. Let me use this thing, not be used by it.Amen.

Scripture to pray with

“The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.”

Psalm 118:24

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Matthew 6:34

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Psalm 90:12

“His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Lamentations 3:22-23

“Your strength will equal your days.”

Deuteronomy 33:25

“You do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

James 4:14

How to pray a prayer for today

  1. Pray it at a fixed trigger. Not “sometime today.” Tie it to something you already do: the kettle, the car door, the moment before you unlock your phone. The trigger is what makes it daily.

  2. Name today specifically. Not “bless my day” but “I have the meeting at ten and the phone call I am dreading at three.” God knows already; saying it out loud is for you.

  3. Ask for enough, not for everything. Deuteronomy 33:25 promises strength equal to your days — today's strength for today, not a stockpile. Ask for that.

  4. Hand over what is not today. Yesterday's failure, next week's worry. Jesus was blunt: each day has enough trouble of its own. Leave the other days with Him.

  5. Come back to it once. Midday, or when the wheels come off, say the short version again. A prayer for today is allowed to be prayed more than once today.

Questions people ask

What is a good prayer to say every day?

The one you will actually say. The short prayer at the top of this page is written for that: it thanks God for the day, asks for enough to get through it, and hands Him yesterday and tomorrow. Many Christians also pray the Lord's Prayer daily, which covers the same ground in Jesus' own words.

What is a powerful prayer to start the day?

Any prayer that puts God before your phone is powerful. Try: “Lord, before I look at the world, I am looking at You.” Then do not pick up the phone until you have finished. The power is less in the words than in the order.

Why pray for today instead of for the future?

Because today is the only day you can live in. Jesus taught us to pray for “daily bread,” not a month's supply, and told us not to worry about tomorrow because “each day has enough trouble of its own.” Praying for today keeps you present, which is where God meets you.

How do I remember to pray every day?

Attach it to something you already do without fail. For most people that is picking up the phone. PrayerMax makes that automatic: your chosen apps lock once a day and open only after you pray, so the prayer happens at exactly the moment you would have scrolled.

Is it okay to pray the same prayer every day?

Yes. Jesus gave us one prayer to repeat and the Church has prayed the Psalms daily for three thousand years. Repetition is not emptiness; it is how words go from your mouth to your heart. Just pray it slowly enough to mean it.
