For most of us it is the phone, before our eyes have even properly focused. Notifications, messages, the news, the feed. By the time we have swung our legs out of bed we have already absorbed forty other people’s opinions, three things to be anxious about, and one thing to buy. We have not had a single thought of our own, let alone a thought of God.
A morning prayer is a small act of rebellion against that. It says: the first minute belongs to Him. Everything else can wait sixty seconds.
What a morning prayer is for
Jesus prayed in the morning. Mark tells us He got up “very early, while it was still dark” and went somewhere quiet. If the Son of God needed to start the day that way, it is probably not optional for us.
The morning prayers on this page do a few simple things:

Pray it before you unlock

How to pray a morning prayer

Pray before you unlock the phone. This is the whole battle. The first thing you give your attention to sets the tone for the day. If it is a feed, the day belongs to the feed. If it is God, the day belongs to God.

Start with thanks. You woke up. That is not nothing. Name two or three specific things you are grateful for before you ask for anything.

Ask for what today actually needs. Not vague blessing. Patience for the 9am meeting. Courage for the hard conversation. Focus for the deadline. Be specific; God is not put off by details.

Hand over your plans. Say them out loud, then say “but Your will, not mine.” It is harder than it sounds and it changes everything.

Take one verse with you. Pick a line from the Scripture below and repeat it three times. That is the verse you will find yourself reaching for at 3pm.
