He is already running toward you
Jesus told a story about a son who took everything his father had and wasted it. When the money was gone and he was starving, he decided to go home and beg for a job. He rehearsed a speech on the road: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.
He never finished the speech. His father saw him from a long way off and ran to him, and the son got as far as “no longer worthy” before he was cut off by an embrace.
That is the God you are praying to. Not a judge weighing whether your confession is sufficiently sorry. A Father who has been watching the road. The prayers on this page are the walk home; He does the running.
Confession is naming, not grovelling
There is a version of asking forgiveness that is really just self-punishment: long, miserable, full of “I am so terrible.” God is not interested in that. He knows exactly how terrible it was; He does not need you to perform it.
What He asks for is honesty. If we confess our sins (1 John 1:9): the word means to say the same thing about it that God says. Not “I made a mistake” when you sinned. Not “I sinned” when you have not. Just the truth, named plainly, without the padding of excuses.
Then He does the rest. He is faithful and just to forgive; it is a promise, not a maybe.
Forgiving others is not optional, and it is not what you think
Jesus tied the two together in the Lord’s Prayer, and again in Matthew 6:14-15, and He was not being gentle about it. A person who receives forgiveness and refuses to give it has not understood what they received.
But forgiving is not what most people fear it is. It is not saying it was okay. It is not trusting them again. It is not reconciliation, which takes two people. It is releasing your right to collect the debt and handing it to God, who is a better judge than you and will not miss anything. You can do that today, while still hurt, while still keeping your distance.
And you will probably have to do it again tomorrow, when the memory comes back. That is not failure. That is what forgiveness looks like from the inside.
The sin you keep coming back to
If you are here for the tenth time about the same thing, read this part slowly.
God is not tired of you. His mercies are new every morning precisely because He knew you would need them every morning. But repeated confession without any change to the pattern is a sign that the problem is not only spiritual; it is structural. Something in your day is making the sin easy.
For a lot of us now, that something is a screen. The scroll leads to the comparison, the comparison to the envy; the late-night phone leads to the thing you promised you would not look at. Confess the sin, yes. Then move the phone out of the bedroom. Put a barrier in front of the apps. Then stop carrying it
As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. East and west never meet. That is how far away your forgiven sin is.
Feelings of guilt will lag; they always do. But the feeling is not the verdict. Romans 8:1 is the verdict: no condemnation. Say it until you believe it. Then walk home. He is already running.

How to pray a prayer for forgiveness

Name it. “Forgive my sins” is a start; “forgive me for lying to her on Tuesday” is confession. 1 John 1:9 says if we confess. Vagueness is usually a way of not quite admitting it.

Drop the excuses. You will want to explain the context. Don't, not yet. God knows the context. Say “I did it, and it was wrong.” Then stop.

Ask, plainly. “Forgive me.” Two words. You are asking a Father who has already decided to say yes; the asking is for you, not to persuade Him.

Receive it out loud. Say “Thank You. I am forgiven.” Feelings of guilt may linger; they are not the verdict. Romans 8:1 is the verdict.

Forgive whoever you need to forgive. Jesus tied the two together in the Lord's Prayer. If someone's name comes to mind, that is not a coincidence.

Make it right where you can. Apologise. Return what was taken. Confession to God does not replace repair with people; it makes it possible.

What is a good prayer to ask God for forgiveness?

I receive Your forgiveness. Amen.” Then name the specific sin. That is a complete prayer of confession, and 1 John 1:9 promises it is heard.
Does God forgive all sins?
Every sin that is brought to Him in genuine repentance: yes. 1 John 1:9 has no exceptions list. Paul persecuted Christians, David committed adultery and murder, Peter denied Jesus three times; all were forgiven and restored. The only sin Scripture describes as unforgivable is the final, permanent refusal of God's forgiveness itself. If you are worried about it, you have not committed it.
How do I forgive someone who hurt me deeply?
By deciding, not by feeling. Forgiveness is releasing your right to collect the debt and handing it to God (Romans 12:19). You can do that while still angry, still hurt, and still wise about the person. It is usually not a one-time act but something you choose again every time the memory returns. And it does not require trusting them again or pretending it did not happen. It requires letting God be the judge instead of you.
Why do I still feel guilty after asking for forgiveness?
Because feelings lag behind facts. God's forgiveness is a legal reality, settled at the cross; guilt is an emotion that takes time to catch up. Keep telling yourself the truth: Romans 8:1, Psalm 103:12, Isaiah 1:18. What is the most powerful prayer for forgiveness in the Bible?
Psalm 51, David's prayer after his adultery with Bathsheba and the death of Uriah. “Have mercy on me, O God... create in me a pure heart.” It is the confession of a man who has run out of excuses, and it has been the Church's prayer of repentance for three thousand years. Pray it aloud, slowly, as your own.
Do I have to forgive someone who is not sorry?
Yes, for your sake and because Jesus asks it (Mark 11:25). Forgiveness is not the same as reconciliation. Reconciliation takes two people and requires repentance; forgiveness takes one person and requires only that you release the debt to God. You can forgive someone completely and still keep your distance. Jesus forgave from the cross people who were not remotely sorry.
