Unless the Lord builds the house
There is a reason Psalm 127 opens the way it does: Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain. Every parent, every spouse, every grown child trying to hold a family together knows the labour. The schedules, the meals, the arguments, the fixing. And every one of us has felt the vanity: the sense that no matter how hard we work at it, something keeps coming apart.
A prayer for family is not an admission that the labour does not matter. It is a recognition of who the real builder is. You are not the foundation of your family. He is. That is a relief, if you let it be.
Pray for the space between
Most family pain does not live in individuals. It lives between them. The distance between two siblings who used to be close. The silence between a father and a son. The tension between a mother and a teenager, thick enough that every sentence is a negotiation.
When you pray for your family, pray for those spaces. Ask God to stand in them. Colossians 3:13 is the verse for this: bear with each other, and forgive one another. Not because the other person deserves it, but because you were forgiven first.

The one who is far
Nearly every family has one: the child who stopped believing, the sibling who stopped calling, the parent who was never close. Praying for them can feel hopeless, especially after years.

How to pray a prayer for family

Go person by person. Not “bless my family” but “bless Sarah, who has the exam. Bless Dad, whose knee is bad. Bless Tom, who has not called in a month.” God knows the names; saying them makes the prayer yours.

Pray for the relationships, not only the people. The gap between two siblings. The tension between you and your teenager. Ask God into the space between people, where most family pain lives.
