David wrote Psalm 139 as a grown man looking back at his own beginning: You knit me together in my mother’s womb. Every birthday is a chance to say the same thing about someone, or about yourself. Before the person did anything, achieved anything, or disappointed anyone, God made them on purpose and called it good.
That is what a birthday prayer is for. Not primarily to ask for things, though we do. It is to stop, once a year, and say thank You for a life.
Thank first, then ask
Most birthday prayers rush to the requests: health, happiness, success. Those are fine. But a life is a gift already given, and the prayer should begin there. Spend the first half on gratitude. Thank God for who this person is: not in general, but specifically. The way she notices who is left out. The way he shows up. The years you have had them.
Then ask. And when you ask, ask for the deepest thing first. Health and happiness are good years. Knowing God more is a good life.
The milestone ones
Round numbers do something to us. Thirty, forty, fifty, seventy: they make us look back, and not everything we see is easy. Things we meant to have done. People we have lost. A version of ourselves we miss.
Psalm 90:12 is the verse for these birthdays. Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Not “help us forget the number,” but teach us to count rightly: to see what the years were actually for, and to spend the remaining ones on what matters. A milestone birthday prayed well can reorder a whole decade.
Say it over them
Here is the practical part. A birthday prayer said privately for someone is good. A birthday prayer said over them, out loud at the table or written in their card in your own handwriting, is something they will remember for years.
Most people have never once heard someone pray for them by name on their birthday. Be the one who does. It costs thirty seconds and it lands deeper than any gift.
And on your own birthday
Take five minutes before the messages start. Before the phone lights up with notifications and you spend the morning replying. Sit with God and look at the year. Thank Him for it, all of it. Hand Him the next one.

How to pray a birthday prayer

Start with thanks, not requests. A birthday is first of all a gift already given: a whole life. Spend the first half of the prayer on gratitude for the person and the year behind.

Be specific about the person. Not “bless them” but “thank You for how she always notices when someone is left out.” The specific thing is what makes it a prayer for them.

Pray for the year ahead in real terms. The exam, the new job, the health scare, the hope they mentioned once. Ask God into what is actually coming.

Is it biblical to celebrate birthdays?
The Bible neither commands nor forbids it. Job's children held feasts “each on his day” (Job 1:4), Jesus' birth was celebrated with gifts and worship, and Scripture repeatedly calls for thanksgiving over God's gifts, of which a life is the first. Celebrating a birthday with gratitude to the Giver is entirely in keeping with that.
